Why It Works: Learning Through Play with a Kids Tool Bench
This DIY activity doesn’t just add hours of play to their kids tool bench, it helps your child grow key developmental skills that will reinforce learning during the school day and beyond.
- STEM Exploration: Encourages measurement, sequencing, and addition.
- Fine Motor Skills: Peeling, aligning, and sawing build precision and coordination.
- Creative Confidence: Inspires kids to take on builder roles and tell their own stories.
- Problem Solving: Encourages resilience and decision-making as kids build and rebuild.
Materials Needed for DIY Cuttable Wooden Block Craft for Kids Tool Bench:
- HABA Wooden Blocks (choose blocks that are flat on all sides)
- Hook-and-loop fasteners (sticky or non-sticky)
- Strong glue (optional, for non-adhesive fasteners)
- Ruler
- Paint pens or colorful markers
Create Your Own Cuttable Wooden Blocks for Your Kids Tool Bench:
Step 1: Select Your Building Materials

Pour out your HABA Wooden Blocks and choose a few different flat-sided blocks in various sizes. These will become your "cuttable" wooden planks!
Step 2: Add Fasteners for Realistic Play
Stick one side of the hook-and-loop fastener (hook side) on one end of a block, and the loop side on the opposite end. If using non-sticky fasteners, apply strong glue and let dry fully. Make sure the circles line up so blocks can easily connect and come apart.
Step 3: Check for Fit
Line up the fasteners and test the connections. When joined, the wooden blocks should form longer “boards” your child can saw apart with their pretend tools. Check that your circles line up with all the blocks. You can either stop here, or continue on to add a fun STEM element to your blocks!

Step 4: Turn It Into a STEM Challenge
Use a ruler to mark centimeters along each block. Then, use paint pens to label each segment. This transforms your kids tool bench into a math-powered building zone. Using a ruler mark where each centimeter is on your blocks.
Using different colored paint pens, draw and label where each centimeter is on the block.
Step 5: Play With Measurement
Challenge your little one to “saw” specific lengths. For example, connect multiple blocks to create a 10 cm board or ask them to saw off 3 cm from a longer piece. This simple activity builds early math confidence.
Step 6: Pair With the HABA 3-in-1 Workshop
Our Creative Play 3-in-1 Kitchen, Store & Workshop is the perfect companion to this craft. Kids can use the included saw to “cut” through the hook-and-loop fasteners, just like a real carpenter. From fixing shelves to fixing flying saucers, the imaginative possibilities of a tool bench for kids are endless.
